{"id":5564,"date":"2019-02-04T03:51:04","date_gmt":"2019-02-04T03:51:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.beer-syndicate.com\/blog\/?p=5564"},"modified":"2019-02-04T15:34:24","modified_gmt":"2019-02-04T15:34:24","slug":"hypocritical-budweiser-super-bowl-ad-takes-jab-coors-using-inferior-ingredients","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/beersyndicate.com\/blog\/hypocritical-budweiser-super-bowl-ad-takes-jab-coors-using-inferior-ingredients\/","title":{"rendered":"Hypocritical Bud Light Super Bowl Ad Takes Jab at Coors for Using Inferior Ingredient"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">In recent years, <em>craft beer<\/em> was the easy target featured in what appear to be Budweiser\u2019s increasingly desperate and misguided Super Bowl attack ads.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">A <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=2uJKhkwTG64\">2015 Budweiser Super Bowl ad<\/a> <\/span>collectively mocked and stereotyped craft beer drinkers as hipster-y, fussy, and pretentious nudniks for drinking the likes of \u201cpumpkin peach beer\u201d, while in the same breath Budweiser\u2019s ad self-praised its corporately mass-produced brand for allegedly being brewed \u201cthe hard way\u201d, seeming to imply that other breweries (craft or otherwise) were, well, lazy.<\/span><\/p><!--CusAds0-->\n<p><iframe width=\"629\" height=\"354\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2uJKhkwTG64?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Budweiser\u2019s attack ad backfired when the <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.grubstreet.com\/2015\/02\/anheuser-busch-pumpkin-peach-ale-ad.html\">craft beer community pointed out the apparent hypocrisy of Bud\u2019s corporate parent company,<\/a><\/span> AB InBev, for attempting to blast craft drinkers for sipping brews like pumpkin peach beer, while at the same time AB InBev sold pumpkin peach beer from its then recently acquired Elysian Brewing Company.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Still smarting from the rock-to-the-head slingshoted from the craft community, the <em>Eye of Sauron<\/em> that is Bud has now shifted its gaze to <u>Coors<\/u>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">In keeping with the now eye-rollingly predictable campy Monty-Python-and-The Holy-Grail theme, <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=LkHvj_KEHBk&amp;feature=youtu.be\">Bud Light\u2019s 2019 Super Bowl ad<\/a><\/span> depicts a large wooden barrel of corn syrup being mistakenly delivered to the Budweiser kingdom\/brewery. After being advised that the barrel-o-corn syrup must belong to Coors in the ad, \u2018King Budweiser\u2019 then benevolently attempts to return the inferior ingredient to the Coors brewery only to learn that Coors already received its shipment, at which point the corn syrup is then rightfully returned to the <em>Coors Light<\/em> brewery.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe width=\"629\" height=\"354\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/LkHvj_KEHBk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">The 2019 Bud Light Super Bowl ad finishes by assuring its viewers that Bud Light is \u201cbrewed with no corn syrup\u201d, apparently implying that corn syrup is a cheap and\/or inferior product.\u00a0 Here, &#8220;inferior&#8221; could be meant to imply (wrongly) that corn syrup used in brewing somehow contributes more to obesity when in fact corn sugars are perhaps just as easily, if not more so, converted to alcohol during the fermentation process as <em>rice sugars<\/em>.<\/span><\/p><!--CusAds0-->\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Speaking of which, what Bud\u2019s Super Bowl ad fails to point out is that its own beer (Budweiser and Bud Light), is also brewed with a comparatively cheap adjunct, namely <u>rice<\/u>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">But not just any rice.\u00a0 Bud has been reported to be <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2007\/10\/09\/world\/americas\/09iht-09budweiser-globe.7816401.html\">tainted with an experimental and genetically engineered rice strain,<\/a><\/span> according to Greenpeace.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">While it\u2019s true that <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.economist.com\/united-states\/2015\/02\/12\/milking-taxpayers\">corn-based products have been subsidized by the U.S. government for many years<\/a><\/span> and could therefore be considered \u201ccheap\u201d, <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cato.org\/publications\/trade-briefing-paper\/grain-drain-hidden-cost-us-rice-subsidies\">so has rice.<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Ignoring for the moment the apparent hypocrisy of Bud calling out Coors for being brewed with supposedly inferior adjuncts, it should be noted that many beer styles, including the currently popular IPA, are traditionally brewed with adjuncts, such as corn sugar (in order to increase alcohol content while drying the beer out).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">In fact, though it was formerly excluded as a craft brewery due to its large scale, the oldest continually operating brewery in the U.S., Yuenglings (established 1829), was <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thestreet.com\/story\/12673031\/1\/how-yuengling-and-schells-became-craft-beer.html\">recently reclassified as a craft brewery<\/a><\/span> because it brewed with traditional ingredients, in this case <u>corn<\/u>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Adjuncts, such as beet sugar, have been used in the most highly regarded Belgian beers for centuries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Long story short, adjuncts do not a bad beer make.\u00a0 And for the most part, when it comes to beer, sugar is sugar, whether it comes from rice, corn, or beets.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">So what\u2019s the message to the crack advertising team behind the recent slew of Bud&#8217;s Super Bowl misfires?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">In the immortal words of Ice Cube: Chickity check yo self before you wreck yo self.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Meanwhile, this writer offers two words of encouragement to <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/budweiser-loses-more-drinkers-in-the-us-2018-07-26\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Budweiser as it continues to lose market share:<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/golf\/2018\/04\/03\/dilly-dilly-banned-catchphrase-masters-2018\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff; font-size: 10pt;\">Dilly dilly.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><b>Author: Hi, I\u2019m D.J.
