{"id":5719,"date":"2019-05-17T20:08:12","date_gmt":"2019-05-17T20:08:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.beer-syndicate.com\/blog\/?p=5719"},"modified":"2019-05-18T15:58:59","modified_gmt":"2019-05-18T15:58:59","slug":"beer-syndicate-reviews-ommegangs-game-thrones-inspired-beers-final-season","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/beersyndicate.com\/blog\/beer-syndicate-reviews-ommegangs-game-thrones-inspired-beers-final-season\/","title":{"rendered":"Beer Syndicate Reviews Ommegang\u2019s <em>Game of Thrones<\/em>-Inspired Beers (Final Season)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Back in December of 2012, Ommegang officially announced its collaboration with HBO to roll out <em>Game of Thrones<\/em>-inspired beers, with the first of its kind, <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/beerpulse.com\/2012\/12\/ommegang-unveils-iron-throne-bottle-formally-announces-game-of-thrones-deal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cIron Throne Blonde Ale\u201d,<\/a> <\/span>released in March of 2013 just ahead of the series season 3 debut on March 31.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Fast forward to 2019, and as the eighth and final season of the popular <em>Game of Thrones <\/em>series draws to its dramatic conclusion, it also brings with it five limited-release <em>GoT<\/em>-themed beers, the latest and perhaps last in a total of fourteen different brews produced since the initial launch.<\/span><\/p><!--CusAds0-->\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">By the way, if you missed out on some of the <em>GoT<\/em>-inspired beers from seasons past, apparently Ommegang\u2019s got Melisandre working some resurrection magic back in the brewhouse because a few of them are about to get brought back to life.\u00a0\u00a0 Recently announced on its <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/BxSxoB7hUXU\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Instragram account,<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>Ommegang will be re-releasing three previously retired fan-favorite <em>GoT<\/em> brews (Take the Black Stout, Fire and Blood Red Ale, and Winter is Here Double White Ale) all in time for the holidays 2019 in a gift pack along with a <em>GoT<\/em> commemorative glass.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.beersyndicate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Ommegang-GoT-Beer-Re-Release.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5727\" src=\"http:\/\/www.beersyndicate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Ommegang-GoT-Beer-Re-Release.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"903\" height=\"424\" srcset=\"http:\/\/beersyndicate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Ommegang-GoT-Beer-Re-Release.png 903w, http:\/\/beersyndicate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Ommegang-GoT-Beer-Re-Release-300x141.png 300w, http:\/\/beersyndicate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Ommegang-GoT-Beer-Re-Release-768x361.png 768w, http:\/\/beersyndicate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Ommegang-GoT-Beer-Re-Release-900x423.png 900w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 903px) 100vw, 903px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">It\u2019s still not confirmed if Ommegang will be releasing future GoT-inspired brews to accompany any of the upcoming GoT spin-offs, though our money is on yes they will.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">But enough about the future and the past, let\u2019s get back to the beers of right now.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Four of the five final season brews pay homage to four epic <em>Game of Thrones <\/em>characters who managed to survive to season eight, namely Daenerys, Cersei, Jon Snow and Tyrion Lannister.\u00a0 The fifth brew is a tribute to whoever the final occupant of the Iron Throne will be.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Speaking of which&#8230; In true <em>Game of Thrones<\/em>-like fashion, we at <em>Beer Syndicate<\/em> pitted each of the final five brews against each other in a brutal trial-by-combat taste-off to see which beer is most worthy to be placed in the built-in cup holder affixed to the Iron Throne.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 13.3333px;\">And whichever character&#8217;s beer that stands victorious is our pick for who will take the Iron Throne.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Ready.\u00a0 Set.\u00a0 Dracarys.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><em><span style=\"font-size: 36pt;\">Game of Beers<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #800000;\"><strong>FOR THE THRONE: STRONG GOLDEN ALE FERMENTED WITH PINOT GRIGIO AND VIOGNIER GRAPE JUICE<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>BREWERY DESCRIPTION<\/strong>: Complex and compelling, yet delicate and refined, For the Throne is our tribute to the final occupant of the Iron Throne. This strong golden ale is co-fermented with Pinot Grigio and Viognier grape juices, then bottle conditioned with Champagne yeast.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">The beer pours a striking golden copper with a fluffy white head. Aromas of honeysuckle and toasted grain mingle with notes of pear and apricot. The finish is clean and dry, with vibrant effervescence. It pours a deep ruby-brown with alluring aromas of tart cherry, dark roast and hints of smoke.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.beersyndicate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Mother-of-Dragons.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-5726\" src=\"http:\/\/www.beersyndicate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Mother-of-Dragons.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"284\" height=\"403\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>BEER SYNDICATE REVIEW<\/strong>: Overall, <em>Mother of Dragons<\/em> is a tasty potentially <em>dessert<\/em> beer dominated by fruit-forward notes of candied raspberry and cherry that provide a mildly tart acidic balance to this medium-sweet milk chocolaty toasted (not smoky) porter.\u00a0 Even at a minority blend ratio of 25% sour cherry beer (kriek) to 75% porter, fruity aromatics take the lead with notes of soft raspberry fruit snacks and mild cherry, followed by chocolate-covered raspberry jelly candy, and coco nibs.\u00a0 Flavor-wise, fruity flavors of raspberry, goji berry, pomegranate and cranberry overshadow the medium-sweet milk chocolate character of this medium-bodied porter, leaving behind an aftertaste of Raspberry Tootsie Pops.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>SCORE<\/strong>: <u>83\/100<\/u><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><strong><u>SPECS<\/u><\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">ABV: 6.6%<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">IBU: 24<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">FERMENTABLES: Pilsner, caramel malt, Munich 20, Cara 20, chocolate malt, Special B and smoked malt barleys, midnight wheat.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">HOPS: Saaz, Magnum, Hallertau.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">YEAST: Ommegang house yeast, Liefmans mixed culture.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">BLENDING NOTES: 75% smoked porter, 25% Belgian kriek.<\/span><\/p><!--CusAds0-->\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #800000;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>QUEEN OF THE SEVEN KINGDOMS: BLEND OF SOUR AND BLONDE ALES<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>BREWERY DESCRIPTION<\/strong>: A special blend of Belgian sour ale and Belgian-style blonde ale, Queen of the Seven Kingdoms reminds us that to Cersei, everyone who isn&#8217;t us is an enemy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.beersyndicate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Queen-of-the-Seven-Kingdoms.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-5721\" src=\"http:\/\/www.beersyndicate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Queen-of-the-Seven-Kingdoms.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"296\" height=\"405\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>BEER SYNDICATE REVIEW<\/strong>: Rightfully billed as a blend of a Belgian Blonde and a sour, <em>Queen of the Seven Kingdoms<\/em> is brilliantly executed, though for a beer inspired by Cersei, one of GoT\u2019s greatest villains, it\u2019s somewhat easy on the sour for being a <em>sour<\/em> Belgian Blonde ale.\u00a0 (See what Ommegang did there&#8211; <em>Cersei<\/em>. <em>Sour blonde ale<\/em>.\u00a0 Yep.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><em>Queen of the Seven Kingdoms<\/em> pours a formidable two thick fingers of billowing creamy pale tan head which gently recedes revealing an opaque golden-honey body while leaving behind a bit of delicate lace clinging to the interior of the glass.\u00a0 Tempting aromatics include loquat, angel food cake, sweet pale malt, lemon Pixie Stix, grapefruit candy, stewed peaches and apricots, and pleasant Belgian yeast, but little suggesting this will be a strongly sour brew aside from a lemony hint of lactic acid.\u00a0 Indeed, more tart and tangy than truly sour, this medium-bodied sour blonde offers up flavors of underripe loquat, cumquat, lemon tonic water, quinine, lemon SweeTarts, and signature Belgian yeast all balanced by a medium-sweet wheaty malt presence. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Nowhere near the intense sourness of a straight Belgian Lambic, the tart component of <em>Queen of the Seven Kingdoms<\/em> is approachably restrained allowing the Belgian Blonde component to shine through, ultimately resulting in a masterful success.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>SCORE<\/strong>: <u>86\/100<\/u><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><strong><u>SPECS<\/u><\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">ABV: 6.5%<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">IBU: 18<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">FERMENTABLES: Two-row, honey malt and aromatic malt barleys, flaked red wheat, dextrose.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">HOPS: Styrian goldings, Saaz.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">SPICES: Lemon peel, grains of paradise.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">YEAST: Ommegang house yeast.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">BLENDING NOTES: A blend of sour ale and blonde ale.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #800000;\"><strong>KING IN THE NORTH: BARREL-AGED IMPERIAL STOUT<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>BREWERY DESCRIPTION<\/strong>: A beer for Jon Snow &#8211; a dark and brooding imperial stout has always been bold enough for normal times, but now that winter is here, something bigger and bolder is needed for the long, dark night. Thus, we enlisted the help of barrels and time to produce King in the North, a rich, bold, barrel-aged imperial stout unlike anything we&#8217;ve brewed before.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.beersyndicate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/King-in-the-North.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-5725\" src=\"http:\/\/www.beersyndicate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/King-in-the-North.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"264\" height=\"375\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>BEER SYNDICATE REVIEW<\/strong>: Pouring a huge moosey khaki head over a pitch black body, <em>King in the North <\/em>is a straight-forward imperial stout delivering aromas of chocolate wafer cookie, marzipan, chocolate pudding skin, Grape-Nuts cereal, mild Bourbon barrel, and a hint of vanilla and root beer, all of which do well to mask an undercurrent of clean vodka-like alcohol. \u00a0Although not a viscousy, woody chocolate-bomb, flavors of dark chocolate are present along with dark roasty malt, a hint of vanilla from the barrel aging, root beer barrel candy, a touch of molasses and big alcohol in this medium-full bodied medium-sweet imperial stout which should only become smoother with age.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>SCORE<\/strong>: <u>89.5\/100<\/u><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><strong><u>SPECS<\/u><\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">ABV: 10.5%<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">IBU: 40<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">FERMENTABLES: Two-row, Cara 45, chocolate malt and roasted barleys, midnight wheat, dark candi syrup.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">HOPS: Columbus, Styrian Goldings, Northern Brewer, Chinook.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">YEAST: Ommegang house yeast.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">AGING NOTES: Aged for 6 months in bourbon barrels.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #800000;\"><strong>HAND OF THE QUEEN: BARLEYWINE ALE<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>BREWERY DESCRIPTION<\/strong>: A beer brewed for Tyrion. As one who knows and loves wine above all, and as his court brewer, we would brew him one.
