According to our brewing references, he and his contemporaries either created the botanical name or at least wrote about Lupus Salictarius, or hops, currently known as Humulus Lupulus. \u00a0After much research in beer books, brainstorming, and deliberation, we came up with &#8220;Pliny the Elder&#8221;.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">After watching a few YouTube videos featuring\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=BD8yWtgdoeA\" target=\"_blank\">employees from Russian River<\/a><\/span> including co-owner\/brewmaster <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=AJeRVfb-zRc\" target=\"_blank\">Vinnie Cilurzo<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0t<\/span><\/span>alk about the beer, \u201cPliny\u201d (the beer) is pronounced \u201cPly\u2013Nee\u201d where the \u201cPly\u201d is pronounced like in the word <u>ply<\/u>wood.\u00a0 However the pronunciation of the historical person \u201cPliny\u201d, who the beer is named after, is actually closer to \u201cPlenny\u201d, like the word \u201cplenty\u201d without the \u201ct\u201d.\u00a0 Here\u2019s a quick YouTube\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=o2f3lzAebcM\" target=\"_blank\">video-pronunciation<\/a><\/span> of Pliny, the man, and here\u2019s <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=iUMVf8bkUQE\" target=\"_blank\">another short video<\/a><\/span>\u00a0about the life of Pliny where you can get plenty of practice pronouncing\u00a0&#8220;Pliny&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">So even though the brewery probably originally mispronounced \u201cPliny\u201d when meaning to refer to Pliny the man, it\u2019s too late to turn back now.\u00a0 Therefore pronounce the beer as\u00a0\u201cPly-Nee\u201d, and the historical figure as \u201cPlenny\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Speaking of the famed brewmaster who invented Pliny (the beer), Vinnie \u201cCilurzo\u201d, <em>how do you pronounce his last name?<\/em>\u00a0 It\u2019s \u201cChill-Ur-Zoh\u201d, not to be confused with the Double IPA that I brew in honor of Vinnie called \u201cCilurzo\u201d but pronounced \u201cSil-Your-Zoh\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Festina P\u00eache<\/strong><\/span><\/span>: This \u201cNeo-Berliner Weissbier\u201d created by\u00a0epic brewermaster\u00a0Sam Calagione of\u00a0Dogfish Head Brewery has been a sour summer treat since 2007, <em>but how do you say \u201cP\u00eache\u201d?<\/em> You might hear Sam pronounce it \u201cpesch-ay\u201d, but this French word for <u>peach<\/u> is closer to \u201cpesch\u201d where the \u201cpe\u201d is pronounced like in the word \u201cpetal\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Now you also know how to pronounce the sweet and sour peach Lambic from Lindemans called (you guessed it) P\u00eache!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">But what about Sam\u2019s last name, \u201cCalagione\u201d?\u00a0 \u201cKala-Joe-Nee\u201d is pretty close.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">So if you find yourself at the Dogfish Head brewery in Milton, Delaware in the summer and happened to run into Sam Calagione, order a \u201cpesch-ay\u201d.\u00a0 But if you\u2019re in France and are feeling like a peach, ask for a \u201cpesch\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Check out this <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=n5DzyWjacww\" target=\"_blank\">YouTube clip<\/a><\/span> from Dogfish Head where you can hear brewermaster Sam Calagione pronounce both \u201cP\u00eache\u201d and also his last name (Calagione) in the first 16 seconds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.beersyndicate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Westvleteren-12.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-2766\" title=\"Westvleteren 12\" src=\"http:\/\/www.beersyndicate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Westvleteren-12.jpg\" alt=\"Westvleteren 12\" width=\"312\" height=\"181\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Westvleteren 12<\/strong><\/span><\/span>: Often proclaimed as the \u201cbest beer in the world\u201d (currently rated # 1 on RateBeer, and # 9 on BeerAdvocate), Westvleteren 12 is one of the most coveted beers on the planet.\u00a0 Brewed in limited quantities by Trappist monks in Belgium and officially sold only at the brewery itself and at the abbey-owned caf\u00e9 called <em>In de Vrede<\/em> (In The Peace), Westvleteren 12 can be tough to come by and tough to pronounce.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">No, this dark Belgian quadruple isn\u2019t pronounced \u201cWest-Vet-Air-In\u201d, but rather \u201cVest-Flayter-In\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">For an audio example of the pronunciation, check out the first 10 seconds of this <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=CbVZFVKET1c\" target=\"_blank\">YouTube video<\/a><\/span> about the brewery.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u00a0<em>Still too tricky?<\/em> Then go with the beer\u2019s nickname: \u201cVesty\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.beersyndicate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Singha.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-2767\" title=\"Singha Beer Label\" src=\"http:\/\/www.beersyndicate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Singha.jpg\" alt=\"Singha Beer Label\" width=\"292\" height=\"246\" \/><\/a>Singha<\/strong><\/span><\/span>: This Thai beer is pronounced \u201csing\u201d, not \u201csing-ha\u201d because the \u201cha\u201d is a silent ha. <em>Ha!<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201cSingha\u201d is an imported word from Sanskrit and refers to a powerful mythological lion in both ancient Hindu and Thai stories.\u00a0 The Sanskrit word was &#8220;Si\u1e43ha&#8221; (Pron: sing) or &#8220;Singh&#8221; (Pron: sing) also meaning lion, so it seems the Thai word is a combination of those transliterations, but in every case, the word is pronounced \u201csing\u201d. \u00a0Coincidentally, did you know that the Swahili word for lion is &#8220;simba&#8221;?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Smithwick&#8217;s<\/strong><\/span><\/span>:\u00a0 <span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Smithwick&#8217;s is an Irish beer, not English, so don\u2019t be an eejit; say it right: \u201cSmih-dicks\u201d\u2026 Not \u201cSmith-Wicks\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.beersyndicate.com\/blog\/10-beer-names-you-might-be-saying-wrong\/3\/\">Next Page<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.beersyndicate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Konig-Ludwig-Weissbier.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-2769\" title=\"K\u00f6nig Ludwig Weissbier\" src=\"http:\/\/www.beersyndicate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Konig-Ludwig-Weissbier.jpg\" alt=\"Konig Ludwig Weissbier\" width=\"286\" height=\"206\" \/><\/a>K\u00f6nig Ludwig Weissbier<\/strong><\/span><\/span>: The royal heritage of this Bavarian hefeweizen can be traced back to 1260 when the House of Wittelsbach first began the brewery, and even the current proprietor, Prince Luitpold of Bavaria, is the great-grandson of the last King (K\u00f6nig) of Bavaria, Ludwig III.\u00a0 If you\u2019re ever in the presence of His Royal Highness who is actually quite passionate about beer, pronounce the beer \u201cKur-Nick Lood-Vick Vice-Beer\u201d, not \u201cKoh-Nidge Lood-Wig Whys-Beer\u201d.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">On\u00a0a side note, the <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.beersyndicate.com\/blog\/10-things-you-might-not-know-about-the-reinheitsgebot-beer-purity-law-of-1516\/\">German Purity Law of 1516<\/a><\/span> (Rheinheitsgebot) that stated that beer could only be made from barely, hops and water is\u00a0not only one of the world\u2019s most famous\u00a0food regulations, but was also created by the prince\u2019s ancestors.\u00a0 In addition, you know that beer festival in Munich called Oktoberfest? That was started by the prince\u2019s Great-Grandfather.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-2770 size-full\" title=\"Samichlaus\" src=\"http:\/\/www.beersyndicate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Samichlaus.jpg\" alt=\"Samichlaus\" width=\"281\" height=\"165\" \/>Samichlaus<\/strong><\/span><\/span>: In the past, you might have\u00a0noticed this statement on the label of this 14% ABV Austrian-produced beer: \u201cTHE STRONGEST BEER IN THE WORLD. GUINNESS BOOK OF RECORDS\u201d.\u00a0 But of course that record was from\u00a01982, as there are\u00a0several\u00a0other stronger beers on the market today.\u00a0 What you won\u2019t find on the label though is how to pronounce \u201cSamichlaus\u201d, which by the way is the Swiss-German word for Santa Claus.\u00a0 The Swiss pronounce it \u201cSam-Ehk-Laus\u201d where the \u201cEhk\u201d is pronounced as when hocking a small loogie.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">You can hear a Swiss youngster\u00a0pronouncing \u201cSamichlaus\u201d at about 1:50 in <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=HdG9Qjf1xNI\" target=\"_blank\">this YouTube clip<\/a><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">So why is Austria producing a Swiss beer?\u00a0 Samichlaus was originally brewed by the H\u00fcrlimann brewery in Z\u00fcrich, Switzerland, and closed in 1997, but the beer was revived by the Austrian brewery Schloss Eggenberg in collaboration with the original H\u00fcrlimann brewers using the same recipe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-2771 size-full\" title=\"Samuel Adams Utopias\" src=\"http:\/\/www.beersyndicate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Utopias.jpg\" alt=\"Samuel Adams Utopias\" width=\"355\" height=\"102\" srcset=\"https:\/\/beersyndicate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Utopias.jpg 355w, https:\/\/beersyndicate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Utopias-300x86.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 355px) 100vw, 355px\" \/>Utopias<\/strong><\/span><\/span>: \u00a0Speaking of strong beers, since 2002 the Guinness Book of Records for strongest beer in the world goes to Sam Adams Utopias which at the time weighed in at 25% ABV, although there have been stronger releases of Utopias since.\u00a0 It\u2019s not that the name of this rare beer is hard to pronounce, \u201cYou-Tope-E-Ahs\u201d, it\u2019s that many people leave off the \u201cs\u201d at the end probably because we\u2019re more familiar with the word \u201cutopia\u201d.\u00a0 But as sure as this beer is strong, there\u2019s an \u201cs\u201d at the end, and it\u2019s not a silent \u201cs\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.beersyndicate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Stella-Artois.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-2772\" title=\"Stella Artois\" src=\"http:\/\/www.beersyndicate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Stella-Artois.jpg\" alt=\"Stella Artois\" width=\"428\" height=\"164\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Stella Artois<\/strong><\/span><\/span>:\u00a0 <span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">By now, Stella Artois has saturated almost every bar and restaurant in the U.S., replacing Heineken as the go-to import beer for those who think that \u201cimported\u201d means sophisticated.\u00a0 And the last thing you want to do when trying to appear sophisticated is to fumble your words.\u00a0 When in doubt, stick with \u201cStella\u201d. \u00a0But if you really want to classy it up, go all-in and order a Stella \u201cArtois\u201d, pronounced \u201cArt-Wa\u201d (not \u201cOur Toys\u201d).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">For the ultimate touch of class, order it Streetcar-style and scream \u201c<strong><em><u>STELLA!!!<\/u><\/em><\/strong>\u201d, but then don\u2019t look surprised if people confuse you with James Bond, you suave devil you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-2753 size-medium\" title=\"Hoegaarden: Who-Gar-Den\" src=\"http:\/\/www.beersyndicate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Who-Gar-Den-300x219.jpg\" alt=\"Hoegaarden: Who-Gar-Den\" width=\"300\" height=\"219\" srcset=\"https:\/\/beersyndicate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Who-Gar-Den-300x219.jpg 300w, https:\/\/beersyndicate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Who-Gar-Den.jpg 746w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Hoegaarden<\/strong><\/span><\/span>: There\u2019s such a mispronunciation-epidemic of this word that the brewery prints the phonetic spelling of the word right on 12 pack boxes.\u00a0 No, it\u2019s not pronounced like what Snoop Dogg might call a park in Compton, but more like this: \u201c<u>Who<\/u>-Gar-Den\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><em>Like this blog?<\/em><em>\u00a0 Well, thanks- we appreciate you!\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Tweet-worthy?
