{"id":325,"date":"2013-11-19T23:35:53","date_gmt":"2013-11-19T23:35:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.beer-syndicate.com\/blog\/?p=325"},"modified":"2016-12-14T15:55:27","modified_gmt":"2016-12-14T15:55:27","slug":"the-top-30ish-things-homebrewers-hate-about-homebrewing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/beersyndicate.com\/blog\/the-top-30ish-things-homebrewers-hate-about-homebrewing\/","title":{"rendered":"The Top <em>30ish<\/em> Things Homebrewers Hate about Homebrewing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On the surface of it, the title \u201c<i>The Top 30ish Things Homebrewers Hate about Homebrewing<\/i>\u201d\u00a0may sound somewhat divisively discouraging, especially to those beginning brewers or to the adventurous souls thinking about picking up the brew kettle and joining the ranks.\u00a0 But don\u2019t be put off.\u00a0 Let me assure you, homebrewing is one of the most fulfillingly humanizing crafts in which one can engage, <em>and<\/em> the rewards of creating the greatest beverage in existence with your own two hands far outweigh the unavoidable toils of the brewer.<\/p>\n<p>The impetus behind this <i>oh-please-not-another-internet<\/i>&#8211;<em>list<\/em> materialized out of a rant topic that was started under the homebrewing forum on the sometimes controversial social news website <i>reddit<\/i>, where fellow homebrewers were polled on the things that irked them the most about their hobby.\u00a0 Despite the homebrewer\u2019s general \u2018pint is half-full\u2019 disposition, within minutes, the conversation spiraled into an all-out gripefest of sorts, proving that not even homebrewers are immune to the cathartic <em>zen-ness<\/em> that can only be attained through a group bitch session.<\/p><!--CusAds0-->\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.beersyndicate.com\/blog\/the-top-30ish-things-homebrewers-hate-about-homebrewing\/2\/\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>Read more&#8230;<\/em><\/span><\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"twitter-follow-button\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/beersyndicate\" data-show-count=\"false\" data-show-screen-name=\"false\">Follow @beersyndicate<\/a><br \/>\n<script>\/\/ <![CDATA[\n!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0],p=\/^http:\/.test(d.location)?'http':'https';if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=p+':\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js';fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document, 'script', 'twitter-wjs');\n\/\/ ]]><\/script><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"twitter-share-button\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/share\" data-url=\"http:\/\/www.beersyndicate.com\/blog\/the-top-30ish-things-homebrewers-hate-about-homebrewing\/\" data-count=\"none\">Tweet<\/a><br \/>\n<script>\/\/ <![CDATA[\n!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0],p=\/^http:\/.test(d.location)?'http':'https';if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=p+':\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js';fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document, 'script', 'twitter-wjs');\n\/\/ ]]><\/script><\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>For your entertainment, I present to you some of the highlights that fermented (<em>yeah&#8230;<\/em>) from a group of homebrewing vets swapping war stories.\u00a0 If you\u2019re a homebrewer, I invite you in for a therapeutic vent by proxy&#8212; and, of course, to see whether any of these brewing pet peeves resonate with you. \u00a0No, I\u2019m not promising any clich\u00e9 <i>Good Will Hunting<\/i> psychological breakthrough moment, but at the very least, you should be able to gain some quantum of solace\u00a0from the fact that you\u2019re not suffering alone.\u00a0 If you\u2019re not a brewer yourself but nevertheless a fan of artisanal beer, after reading this laundry list of complaints, you might be tempted to ask yourself with all the headaches that come with homebrewing, <em>why does anyone do it<\/em>? \u00a0Fair question. Though I can\u2019t answer for every brewer, I suspect that for the most of us, no matter how woeful the laments of the homebrewer may be, in the end, the call of brew kettle is just far too mighty a thing to resist; not to mention that us homebrewers have a secret weapon that keeps us fighting the good fight despite all odds (more on that at the end).<\/p>\n<p>As a side note, contrary to what you might have heard about some of the less than savory types skeezing around the shadier corners on the reddit landscape, the homebrewing forum is a hidden gem, predominately comprised of some of the most helpful, creative, and supportive people around (that&#8217;s just part of the homebrewer&#8217;s DNA).\u00a0 Sure, there\u2019s the occasional good-natured ribbing, but all in all, it\u2019s an interactive place to share ideas and have a laugh while you\u2019re at it.<\/p>\n<p>So on behalf of grumbling homebrewers everywhere, I offer you a compilation of the top <i>30ish<\/i> things (in no particular order) that homebrewers like <i>least<\/i> about their craft:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><i>\u201cI hate cleaning. Trying to sanitize an auto-siphon drives me to insanity.\u201d<\/i><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><i>\u201cI see your cleaning, and raise you a disappointing final brew. If it&#8217;s not perfect, it&#8217;s disappointing.\u201d<\/i><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><i>\u00a0\u201cWaiting for the wort to chill&#8230;\u201d<\/i><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><i>\u201cBeing a human forklift.\u201d<\/i><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><i>\u201cLiving an hour and a half from the closest LHBS [local homebrew store].\u201d<\/i><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><i>\u00a0\u201cDrinking the last beer of a really good batch.\u201d<\/i><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><i>\u00a0\u201cMissing targets.\u201d<\/i><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><i>\u201cForgetting something. So many moving parts going around on brewday, I inevitably forget something, be it cleaning and sanitizing the autosiphon, or buying new tubing or fresh ice. \u00a0Anything that keeps me from sitting down with a beer and watching the brew boil is a stressor.\u201d<\/i><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><i>\u201cDelayed gratification. Boil-overs.\u201d<\/i><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><i>\u201cThe fact that fermentation takes time. Nothing like watching your protobeer, imagining how delicious it&#8217;ll be, wondering exactly what hop character came through, etc.\u201d<\/i><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><i>\u201cWhenever anyone asks me about brewing because they are curious about doing it themselves, I ask them whether or not doing the dishes is their favorite chore. If they say anything but &#8220;yes&#8221; I advise them to just buy good craft beer instead.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/i><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><i>\u201cRunning out of propane mid-boil.\u201d<\/i><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><i>\u201cI always end up with the first world problem of brewing way more beer than I should really drink&#8230; so I hate when my kegs are still full and I&#8217;ve got a beer that&#8217;s done fermenting that I really want to try.\u201d<\/i><\/strong><\/span><\/p><!--CusAds0-->\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><i>\u201cI hate putting hours of work into bottling only to end up with 20 gallons of sweet, flat beer.\u201d<\/i><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><i>\u201cI had someone ask &#8220;Is this [homebrewed beer] going to make me blind?&#8221;, but did it with a smile that indicated they were prepared for the blindness but just wanted to confirm. Those are the fun ones.\u201d<\/i><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><i>\u201cBottling. I just really dislike bottling.\u201d<\/i><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><i>\u201cCurrently, trying to convince the two others in our brewing group to brew on a schedule. Not brewing equals WTF.\u201d<\/i><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><i>\u201cDelabeling and the initial cleaning of commercial bottles.\u201d<\/i><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><i>\u201cAs a beginner, I dislike the not knowing. Example: I&#8217;m waiting for some beer to carbonate. Will it? Has it? Was it too cold? Should I move it? I better move it. Wait, maybe I shouldn&#8217;t move it. I&#8217;ll just leave it. I&#8217;ll just wait and leave it where it is. Tomorrow, I&#8217;ll have the same conversation again.\u201d<\/i><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><i>\u201cFiltering the internet noise to find answers.\u201d<\/i><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><i>\u201cWhen I make a so-so batch (bad recipe, infection, whatever&#8230;) and I end up with 5 gallons of beer that I don&#8217;t care so much for, not good enough to give away, and not terrible enough to throw down drain.\u201d<\/i><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><i>\u201cHaving a majority of my non-brewing friends not be &#8220;beer drinkers&#8221;.\u201d<\/i><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><i>\u00a0\u201cWaiting for the wort to boil after adding the extract.\u201d<\/i><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><i>\u201cOther brewers.\u201d<\/i><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><i>\u201cSeven hour brew days.\u201d<\/i><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><i>\u201cFreaking siphoning. It&#8217;s so hard to maximize what you can pull out while minimizing the lees. And then once it&#8217;s all done you either have floaties in your final product, or the guilt of leaving like a quart in the carboy.\u201d<\/i><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><i>\u201cWaiting. I&#8217;ve got boxes and boxes of beer in the closet waiting to reach its prime, waiting to bottle, waiting to carb. Dammit, I want beer now!\u201d<\/i><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><i>\u201cWhen people ask me how to do it expecting a quick answer.\u201d<\/i><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><i>\u201cPeople who ask to hang around for a brewday to &#8220;see how it\u2019s done&#8221; and expect it to all be done in an hour.\u201d<\/i><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><i>\u201cNegotiating time with my wife.\u201d<\/i><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Take a deep breath: You&#8217;ve just successfully completed a journey through the complaint box of the homebrewer. \u00a0\u00a0As is the case with just about everything, homebrewing comes with its own little set of frustrations&#8212; no doubt about it. \u00a0But unlike other crafts, homebrewing has a built-in, seven letter, Wolverine-like\u00a0self-healing factor that enables the homebrewer to recover from aggravation with resilience, ultimately putting things back into a proper prospective.\u00a0 You guessed it: <i>RDWHAHB (Relax, Don&#8217;t Worry, Have A Homebrew)<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p><i>Now if we could only apply that credo to all parts of life\u2026<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s toast to that.<\/p>\n<p><em>L\u2019chaim!<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><em style=\"font-weight: inherit;\">Like this\u00a0blarticles?
