{"id":3948,"date":"2017-03-29T18:02:01","date_gmt":"2017-03-29T18:02:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.beer-syndicate.com\/blog\/?p=3948"},"modified":"2018-02-20T22:09:51","modified_gmt":"2018-02-20T22:09:51","slug":"craft-beer-mexico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/beersyndicate.com\/blog\/craft-beer-mexico\/","title":{"rendered":"A Craft Beer from Mexico"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">With well <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">over<\/span> <a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ratebeer.com\/breweries\/mexico\/0\/133\/\">200 microbreweries<\/a><\/span> in the country, craft (or \u201cArtesenal\u201d) beer in Mexico is officially a thing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Of course, when most people think of Mexican beer, they don&#8217;t exactly think of the bold flavors craft beer is known for. \u00a0And there&#8217;s a reason for that. <\/span><\/p><!--CusAds0-->\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">According to <em>The Oxford Companion to Beer<\/em>, historically, the Mexican beer industry has been greatly influenced by German and Austrian immigrates who started breweries in Mexico during the short-lived reign of Austrian-born Mexican Emperor Maximiliano I (1864-1867).<sup><span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">1<\/span><\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">As a matter of\u00a0fact, you might have even heard\u00a0of at least one popular <em>Austrian<\/em>-style beer produced in Mexico today\u2026 That\u2019s right, <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.beersyndicate.com\/app\/Beer\/Details\/26149?currentFilter=Dos%20Equis%20\">Dos Equis Amber Lager<\/a><\/span> is actually an example of a <em>Vienna<\/em> Lager.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">And\u00a0while most of the mass-produced commercial Mexican brands of beer reflect the near-flavorless macro beers of their neighbors to the north, a country that was also greatly influenced by Lager-centric German brewers, thankfully Mexican craft breweries have taken a foothold and are beginning to offer the Mexican palate what it demands of its food: <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">flavor<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">One such Mexican craft brewery is <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/aguamala.com.mx\/?page_id=43&amp;lang=en\">Agua Mala.<\/a><\/span> \u00a0The name &#8220;agua mala&#8221; is perhaps a bit of a playful pun as it literally translates from Spanish as \u201cbad water\u201d (potentially referring to Mexico&#8217;s reputation for its <em>less than safe<\/em> drinking water), but is also slang for \u201cjellyfish\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">And it\u2019s the jellyfish, along with other marine life, that is the theme of this sea-side brewery in Ensenada, Mexico, the first &#8220;legal&#8221; brewery in Ensenada as the brewery <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/aguamala.com.mx\/?page_id=31&amp;lang=en\">points out.<\/a><\/span> \u00a0(As a bonus for X-Files fans, <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Agua_Mala\">\u201cAgua Mala\u201d<\/a><\/span> is also the title of episode 13, season 6 of the <span style=\"color: #000000;\">series which\u00a0<\/span>features a jellyfish-like monster that attempts to breed with the residents in a small Florida town.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">What began as a homebrewing adventure for one marine biologist grew into a craft brewery that boasts a variety of different beer styles in its range including an English Bitter, Belgian Wit, American Pale Ale, IPA, Amber, Oatmeal Stout, and even a Christmas beer. (Not to mention a <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/aguamala.com.mx\/?page_id=123&amp;lang=en\">craft cider<\/a><\/span> as well.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Our pick was the <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.beersyndicate.com\/app\/Beer\/Details\/20840\">Mako Pale Ale<\/a><\/span>, named after <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shortfin_mako_shark\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">the fastest species of shark<\/span><\/a> in the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.beersyndicate.com\/app\/Beer\/Details\/20840\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><strong><u>Mako Pale Ale &#8211; Agua Mala<\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p><!--CusAds0-->\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.beersyndicate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Agua-Mala-Pale-Ale-Label.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3979 size-full\" title=\"Mako Pale Ale - Agua Mala\" src=\"http:\/\/www.beersyndicate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Agua-Mala-Pale-Ale-Label.jpg\" alt=\"Mako Pale Ale - Agua Mala\" width=\"458\" height=\"379\" srcset=\"https:\/\/beersyndicate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Agua-Mala-Pale-Ale-Label.jpg 458w, https:\/\/beersyndicate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Agua-Mala-Pale-Ale-Label-300x248.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 458px) 100vw, 458px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>The Gist<\/strong>: A pretty spot-on take on an American Pale ale with excellent clarity and exciting juicy papaya hop components in an impressively clean beer. <em>Craziest of all?<\/em> The brewer was able to cram so much flavor into such a sessionable 3.4% ABV beer- <em>Odelay M\u00e9xico!<\/em>\u00a0 Additional props go to this detailed-oriented brewery for adding such label info as the beer\u2019s OG (original gravity), IBUs (bitterness) and SRM (color)! \u00a0And at least on the bottles we sampled, there were pricing gun labels noting the bottling date and &#8216;Best By&#8217; date.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.beersyndicate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Mako-Pale-Ale.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-3942 size-medium\" title=\"Mako Pale Ale - Agua Mala\" src=\"http:\/\/www.beersyndicate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Mako-Pale-Ale-224x300.jpg\" alt=\"Mako Pale Ale - Agua Mala\" width=\"224\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/beersyndicate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Mako-Pale-Ale-224x300.jpg 224w, https:\/\/beersyndicate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Mako-Pale-Ale.jpg 546w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 224px) 100vw, 224px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Description<\/strong>: Mako Pale ale pours a \u00bd inch of slowly fading frothy antique white head over a nearly crystal clear orange-copper body. \u00a0The aroma tempts the palate with notes of juicy papaya, light honey graham cracker, agave nectar, hop resin, star fruit, green apple candy ring, and a dash of salt. The flavor tracks the aroma closely leading with juicy papaya and sugared grapefruit which are tempered by a white pepper hop tanginess, and concludes with a mild grapefruit bitterness in this slightly viscous brew.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>How to say \u201ccheers\u201d in Spanish<\/strong>: \u201c\u00a1Salud!\u201d (Literally \u201cHealth\u201d).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">[1.
