Chug: Analysis of The Most Popular Beer Styles in the World"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">What is the most and least popular beer style in the world in terms of number of commercial examples?\u00a0 Which type of beer is more popular: lager or ale?\u00a0 Which country has contributed most to the number of beer styles in the world?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">To attempt an answer at these questions and more, we analyzed data from the popular beer rating website <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beeradvocate.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">BeerAdvocate<\/span><\/a> and provided the results below.<\/span><\/p><!--CusAds0-->\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><strong>A Word About BeerAdvocate<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">As mentioned, BeerAdvocate is an online beer rating site among other things.\u00a0 As of this writing, the website has a database of 210,023 different commercial beers and counting, all of which are categorized under one of the existing 104 different <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beeradvocate.com\/beer\/style\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">beer styles<\/span><\/a>\u00a0as listed and defined by the site.\u00a0 BeerAdvocate clearly indicates on its website that its list and definitions of beer styles \u201cis not the bible for beer styles, but should be viewed as a work-in-progress and a fun reference that&#8217;s open to change and interpretation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">That said, BeerAdvocate arranges all of the beer styles it&#8217;s identified under three main categories: <strong>ale<\/strong>, <strong>lager<\/strong> and <strong>hybrid<\/strong>, as shown in <strong>yellow<\/strong>, <strong>pink<\/strong> and <strong>blue<\/strong> respectively in the chart below.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><strong><mark>[Click on any chart to magnify.]<\/mark><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">For clarification, the difference between ales and lagers is generally based on the type of yeast used to make the beer. \u00a0Ales are fermented with what is called \u201ctop-fermenting yeast\u201d and are typically fermented at warmer temperatures, whereas lagers are fermented at colder temperatures with \u201cbottom-fermenting yeast.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">\u201cHybrid beers\u201d sometimes refer to both ales that are fermented at colder temperatures and lagers that are fermented at warmer temperatures.\u00a0 However, BeerAdvocate seems to use the term \u201chybrid\u201d to refer to beer styles that could be fermented with ale or larger yeast, specifically \u201cFruit\/Vegetable Beer\u201d, \u201cHerbed\/Spiced Beer\u201d, and \u201cSmoked Beer.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">As shown in the chart above, the main \u201cale styles\u201d and \u201clager styles\u201d categories are further sub-categorized primarily by the country in which a particular beer style originated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">For example, under the \u201cale styles\u201d category, we find the sub-category of \u201cIrish Ales\u201d under which the following beer styles are listed:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">\u22c5 Irish Dry Stout<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<strong> <span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"> \u22c5 Irish Red Ale<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">When a given commercial beer is reviewed on BeerAdvocate, that beer will always be associated with a given beer style.\u00a0 For example, if one were to review \u201cGuinness Draught,\u201d it would be associated with the \u201cIrish Dry Stout\u201d style of beer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><strong>The Current Beerscape by the Numbers<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Interested to gauge the current landscape of beer styles and their popularity, we took a quick look at the total number of commercial beers listed under a given beer style on BeerAdvocate\u2019s website.\u00a0 First we reviewed the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beeradvocate.com\/beer\/style\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">list of beer styles<\/span><\/a> arranged in order of the greatest number of commercial examples of a given style.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.beersyndicate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/BeerAdvocate-Beer-Styles.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-4651 size-full\" title=\"BeerAdvocate Beer Styles Sorted by Number of Commercial Examples\" src=\"http:\/\/www.beersyndicate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/BeerAdvocate-Beer-Styles.png\" alt=\"BeerAdvocate Beer Styles Sorted by 10pt;\">The chart above lists 104 different beer styles with a grand total of 210,023 different commercial examples of those beer styles.\u00a0 By far, American IPA is the most popular beer style in the world in terms of commercial examples brewed (27,515).\u00a0\u00a0 Rounding out the bottom of the list sits the sweet and sour Belgian Lambic style <em>Faro<\/em> with only 20 commercial examples to its name.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">To get a big-picture view of things, we next take a look at how popular lagers are compared to ales both by number of total beer styles in each category and by the number of total commercial examples listed under those categories. \u00a0(The following two charts exclude hybrid beer styles as defined by BeerAdvocate.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.beersyndicate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Ale-vs-Lager-by-Number-of-Beer_Styles.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-4669 size-full\" title=\"Ales vs Lagers by Number of Beer Styles\" src=\"http:\/\/www.beersyndicate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Ale-vs-Lager-by-Number-of-Beer_Styles.png\" alt=\"Ales vs Lagers by Number of Beer Styles\" width=\"840\" height=\"462\" srcset=\"https:\/\/beersyndicate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Ale-vs-Lager-by-Number-of-Beer_Styles.png 840w, style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">The chart above shows that there are in total 27 different kinds of lager style beers (26.73%), and 74 different kinds of ale style beers (73.27%).\u00a0 And while lager styles make up only about a quarter of all beer styles compared to ale styles, it should be noted that one particular style of lager, namely <em>American Adjunct Lager<\/em>, dominates all other beer styles in terms of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/10-biggest-selling-beer-brands-globally-2016-5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">global production by volume.<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">The chart below takes a closer look at lagers and ales, and indicates that there are 27,197 different commercial examples of lager beer (13.39% of all commercial examples), and 175,818 examples of ale beer (or 86.60% of all commercial examples).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.beersyndicate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Lagers-vs.-Ales-by-Total-Number-of-Commercial-Examples.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-4691 size-full\" title=\"Lagers vs. Ales by Total Number of Commercial Examples\" therefore more cost-intensive as compared to most ales.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">The Top 10 Beer Styles by Commercial Example<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">The chart below shows the top 10 most popular beer styles by the number of commercial examples listed on BeerAdvocate.\u00a0 Again, American IPA dominates the beerscape with 27,515 commercial examples produced, outpacing its next closest rival, American Pale Ale, by a whopping 13,750 commercial examples.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.beersyndicate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Top-10-Most-Popular-Beer-Styles-by-Number_of_Commerical_Examples.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-4689 hybrids.\u00a0 To put it another way, of all the 210,023 commercial examples of beer listed on BeerAdvocate, 96,340 belong to only ten different beer styles, suggesting that although there is a great diversity of beers styles (104 listed styles), there are much fewer commercial examples of this diversity actually produced.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Also of note, the data above reflects that 9 out of 10 of the top 10 beer styles are American beer styles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">To attempt to explain this seemingly lopsided beerscape leaning in favor of American beer styles, let&#8217;s consider a few more data points including <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.beersyndicate.com\/blog\/?p=4667&amp;page=2&amp;preview=true\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">beer style data and analysis per country<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0to see if American styles are simply crushing it, or if this is all just a numbers game.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.beersyndicate.com\/blog\/?p=4667&amp;page=2&amp;preview=true\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Next Page style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">The following chart shows that the U.S. leads the world in total number of beer styles contributed with 29, followed by Germany at 22, The British with 19, Belgian &amp; French with 18, the Scottish with 3, the Irish and Japanese with 2 each, and lastly the Czechs, Finnish and Russians each with 1.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.beersyndicate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Beer_Style-Contributions-by-Country.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-4670 size-full\" title=\"Number style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">As we can see above, there are more American beer styles than those native to any other country.\u00a0 However this fact alone does not explain why out of 104 different beer styles it is American beer styles that dominate the top 9 out of 10 positions in terms of commercial examples.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">This apparent disproportion is even easier to see in the chart below that shows the total number of commercial examples by beer styles native to a given country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.beersyndicate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/The-Number-of-Commerical-Examples-by-Beer-Style.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-4676 size-full\" style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">As the chart above indicates, there are 111,293 commercial examples of American beer styles which represents 55.87% of the total number of commercial examples above.\u00a0 This means that the number of commercial examples of American beer styles are greater than all other non-American beer styles\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">combined<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Considering that the number of commercial examples of the beer styles listed above may be affected by the number of breweries in that particular country, we next look to identify the total number of breweries in those respective countries in the following chart as per BeerAdvocate, Feb. 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.beersyndicate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Number-of-Breweries-Per-Country.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-4680 size-full\" title=\"Number of Breweries Per Country\" src=\"http:\/\/www.beersyndicate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Number-of-Breweries-Per-Country.png\" alt=\"Number of Breweries Per Country\" width=\"985\" style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">As suspected, the U.S. leads with 6,731 breweries, followed by England with 1,983, Germany with 1,413, Belgium &amp; France with 753 ( 346 and 407 respectively), Russia with 255, Scotland at 216*, Japan with 194, the Czech Republic with 147, Ireland with 83, and Finland with 60.\u00a0 (* Scotland was separated from the U.K. in the chart above for illustrative purposes and is not currently an independent country.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Adding up all the non-U.S. breweries on the chart totals 5,104, which is still less than the 6,731 breweries in the U.S. by a figure of 1,627 breweries.\u00a0 This means that U.S. breweries represent 56.87% of the total breweries listed, which is remarkably close to the percentage of commercial examples of American beer styles (55.87%) compared to the total number of all commercial examples of non-American beer styles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">From the number of breweries per country, especially in the U.S., we can begin to develop a stronger hypothesis for why U.S. beer styles dominate in terms of commercial examples&#8212; there are simply more breweries in the U.S. producing more commercial examples of American styles of beer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Of course this begs the question: Is the U.S. really dominating, relatively speaking, after we account for the number breweries there are per country?\u00a0 \u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 13.3333px;\">Not necessarily.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">For example, when we look at the total number of breweries per country in comparison to the number of beer styles native to those respective countries, we see that the U.S. has actually produced
