things.\u00a0 Untappd has exactly 50 beers on its\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/untappd.com\/beer\/top_rated\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Top Rated Beers list,<\/a><\/span> and of course that data is subject to change over time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">We pulled the Untappd&#8217;s Top Rated Beers data on 3\/7\/18, and for your convenience, we created a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.beersyndicate.com\/blog\/untappd-top-rated-beers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">sortable version<\/span><\/a> of that list which can be used to arrange the results by brewery, beer style, state\/country, ABV, etc.<\/span><\/p><!--CusAds0-->\n<p><span style=\"font-size: Bourbon County line of beers dominate the Top 10, gobbling up the first four places in part because of how Untappd often counts different vintages of the same beer as unique entries in the rankings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">In fairness to Untappd, the different vintages of Bourbon County are arguably unique beers utilizing a unique set of ingredients.\u00a0 For example, the top rated beer, <em>Proprietor&#8217;s Bourbon County Brand Stout (2014)<\/em>, is made in rye barrels with cassia bark, cocoa nibs, panela and coconut water, and weighs in at 13.2% ABV.\u00a0 Compare that to <strong>Proprietor&#8217;s Bourbon County Brand Stout (2017) <\/strong>aged in bourbon barrels with bananas, roasted almonds, and cassia bark, with an ABV of 14%.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Other beer rating websites like BeerAdvocate often collapse a beer of different vintages into one entry, as with <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.beeradvocate.com\/beer\/profile\/1146\/57747\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bourbon County Brand Coffee Stout.<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Not to mention, Untappd leaves beers that are no longer brewed in the Top 50 including the top four beers, whereas such &#8220;retired beers&#8221; are removed from BeerAdvocate&#8217;s Top 50.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">With that in mind, the flat out leader of Untappd\u2019s Top Rated Beers remains Goose Island, a brewery that is no longer considered a craft brewery by the <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.brewersassociation.org\/statistics\/craft-brewer-defined\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brewers Association<\/a><\/span> as of 2011 when the brewery was<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> <a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/the-deal-that-shook-craft-beer-five-years-ago-is-still-reverberating-2016-04-21\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sold to Anheuser-Busch InBev for a reported $38.8 million.<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 13.5pt; color: #000080;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">2.<\/span> Analysis of the\u00a0Beer Styles Listed on Untappd\u2019s Top Rated Beers<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Of the more than the <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bjcp.org\/docs\/2015_Guidelines_Beer.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">100 different beer styles<\/a><\/span> in the world, only\u00a0<strong>10<\/strong> appear in Untappd\u2019s list of its Top 50 beers.\u00a0 The chart below shows the number of examples of beer styles in Untappd\u2019s Top 50, where both the \u201c<strong>Double IPA<\/strong>\u201d and \u201c<strong>American Imperial Stout<\/strong>\u201d data points are colored green to indicate that there are a statistically significant number of examples of those beer styles in the Top 50.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.beersyndicate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Beer-Styles-Untappd.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" 10pt;\">The variety of beer styles in the Top 50 is even less diverse if you lump \u201ctriple IPA\u201d and \u201cDouble IPA\u201d under the same category as BeerAdvocate and others do, and likewise combine \u201cMilk Stout\u201d and \u201cImperial Milk Stout\u201d as one style.\u00a0 The diversity of beer styles shrinks even further if you remove \u201cMelomel Mead,\u201d a kind of fruit honey-wine, as shown in the chart below.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.beersyndicate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Percent-of-Beer-Styles-Untappd.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4949\" src=\"http:\/\/www.beersyndicate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Percent-of-Beer-Styles-Untappd.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"459\" srcset=\"https:\/\/beersyndicate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Percent-of-Beer-Styles-Untappd.png 660w, 10pt;\">As you can see in chart above, <strong>American Imperial Stouts<\/strong> make up fully <strong>54%<\/strong> of the beers in Untappd\u2019s Top 50, while <strong>Double IPAs<\/strong> account for <strong>27%<\/strong>, which means that <strong>4 out of 5<\/strong> beers in Untappd&#8217;s Top 50 was one of those two styles of beer.\u00a0 American Imperial Stouts and Double IPAs were also by far the most popular beer styles in both <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.beersyndicate.com\/blog\/data-chug-analysis-beeradvocates-top-250-beers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BeerAdvocate\u2019s Top 250<\/a><\/span> and <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.beersyndicate.com\/blog\/beeradvocate-top-50-beers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Top 50.<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 13.5pt; color: #000080;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">3.<\/span> Analysis of the Alcohol Content of Untappd\u2019s Top Rated Beers<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">The majority of beers in Untappd&#8217;s Top 50 tend to be a bit on the boozy side, as you can see in the chart below.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.beersyndicate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/ABV-Distribution-Untappd.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4945\" src=\"http:\/\/www.beersyndicate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/ABV-Distribution-Untappd.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"713\" height=\"387\" srcset=\"https:\/\/beersyndicate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/ABV-Distribution-Untappd.png 713w, https:\/\/beersyndicate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/ABV-Distribution-Untappd-300x163.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 713px) 100vw, 713px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">The average ABV\u00a0 is right at\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>11.55%<\/strong><\/span>.\u00a0 The beers with the lowest ABV on Untappd\u2019s Top Rated Beers are \u201c<strong>Julius<\/strong>\u201d and \u201c<strong>JJJULIUSSS<\/strong>\u201d both from Tree House Brewing Co. and weighing in at <strong>6.8%<\/strong>, while the most potent beer on this list was \u201c<strong>Black Tuesday Reserve (2015)<\/strong>\u201d from The Bruery with an alcohol content of <strong>20.5%<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p><!--CusAds0-->\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">These figures exclude the unlisted ABV of \u201cRare Scoop\u201d from Cycle Brewing.\u00a0 But seeing as how that beer is an American Imperial Stout, the average ABV is not likely to be affected much.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">4.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13.5pt;\"> Analysis of the States\/Countries of Untappd\u2019s Top Rated Beers<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">With the exception of a single Lambic style beer from Brouwerij 3 Fonteinen of Belgium, all of the beers that appear in Untappd\u2019s Top Rated Beers were from 13 American breweries, which may simply be a result of a predominantly American user base.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.beersyndicate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Number-of-Beers-per-State_Untappd.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5053\" src=\"http:\/\/www.beersyndicate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Number-of-Beers-per-State_Untappd.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"659\" height=\"411\" srcset=\"https:\/\/beersyndicate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Number-of-Beers-per-State_Untappd.png 659w, https:\/\/beersyndicate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Number-of-Beers-per-State_Untappd-300x187.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 659px) 100vw, 659px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">The average number of beers per state\/country listed above was <b>3.57<\/b>, and the only state with a statistically significant number of beers in the Top 50 was Massachusetts with <strong>11<\/strong>.\u00a0 Interestingly, <strong>10<\/strong>\u00a0out of the <strong>11<\/strong>\u00a0beers from Massachusetts came from one brewery: <strong>Tree House Brewing Company.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Of course, some states have more breweries than others, which could potentially increase the number of beers from a given state in the Top 50.\u00a0 For example, <strong>California<\/strong> has the <strong>third highest<\/strong> number of beers in the Top 50 with a total of <strong>5<\/strong> beers, which may seem rather high at first glance.\u00a0 However, if we consider that there are just over <strong>800<\/strong> breweries in California as of this writing, the relative number of beers contributed by California to the Top 50 based on the number of breweries in the state is a mere <strong>0.63%<\/strong>, which is the <strong>third lowest<\/strong> relative percentage as shown in the chart below.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.beersyndicate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Percent-of-Beers-per-State_Untappd.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5054\" src=\"http:\/\/www.beersyndicate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Percent-of-Beers-per-State_Untappd.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"441\" srcset=\"https:\/\/beersyndicate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Percent-of-Beers-per-State_Untappd.png 660w, https:\/\/beersyndicate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Percent-of-Beers-per-State_Untappd-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Even when we look at the numbers this way, Massachusetts is still leading the pack with <strong>11<\/strong>\u00a0beers in the Top 50 coming from a possible <strong>168<\/strong> breweries in the state, or <strong>6.55%<\/strong>.\u00a0 Iowa follows close behind with <strong>5<\/strong> beers in the Top 50 in a state of <strong>82<\/strong> total breweries. \u00a0Similar to Massachusetts, all <strong>5<\/strong> beers from Iowa came from just one brewery, namely <strong>Toppling Goliath Brewing Co.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 13.5pt; color: #000080;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">5.<\/span> Most Popular Breweries on Untappd\u2019s Top Rated Beers<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">There were a total of <strong>23<\/strong> different breweries with at least one beer in Untappd&#8217;s Top Rated Beers, as shown in the chart below.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.beersyndicate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Number-of-Beers-per-Brewery_Untappd.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5055\" src=\"http:\/\/www.beersyndicate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Number-of-Beers-per-Brewery_Untappd.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"798\" height=\"554\" srcset=\"https:\/\/beersyndicate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Number-of-Beers-per-Brewery_Untappd.png 798w, https:\/\/beersyndicate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Number-of-Beers-per-Brewery_Untappd-300x208.png 300w, style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">The average number of beers contributed per brewery was <strong>2.17<\/strong>. However, any brewery with more than <strong>3<\/strong> beers in the Top 50 was considered a statistical outlier, which is indicated with a green data point in the chart above.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">There were exactly four breweries contributing a statistically significant number of beers to Untappd\u2019s list of Top Rated Beers:\u00a0<strong>Tree House Brewing Co.<\/strong> with <strong>11<\/strong>, <strong>Goose Island Beer Co.<\/strong> with <strong>7<\/strong>, <strong>Toppling Goliath Brewing Co.<\/strong> with <strong>5<\/strong>, and <strong>Side Project Brewing<\/strong> with <strong>4<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Since some breweries produce a greater variety of beers than others, this might create a greater potential for breweries that beer a larger variety of beer to have more beers in the Top 50 than others.\u00a0 For instance, <strong>Goose Island<\/strong> had <strong>7<\/strong> beers in the Top 50, which was the second highest number of all.\u00a0 However, it turns out that Goose Island produces a whopping 250 different beers, which means just <strong>2.8%<\/strong> of the beers that the brewery makes appeared in the Top 50.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Following this line of reasoning, below is a chart showing the percent of beers contributed by a particular brewery based on the number of beers that brewery produces.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.beersyndicate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Relative-Percent-of-Beers_Untappd.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5056\" src=\"http:\/\/www.beersyndicate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Relative-Percent-of-Beers_Untappd.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"802\" height=\"553\" srcset=\"https:\/\/beersyndicate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Relative-Percent-of-Beers_Untappd.png 802w, https:\/\/beersyndicate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Relative-Percent-of-Beers_Untappd-300x207.png 300w, https:\/\/beersyndicate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Relative-Percent-of-Beers_Untappd-768x530.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 802px) 100vw, 802px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">There were four breweries with a statistically significant percentage of beers in the Top 50 relative to the total number of beers they produce.\u00a0 These outlier breweries are indicated with green data points in the chart above, namely <strong>Tree House (16.13%)<\/strong>, <strong>Toppling Goliath (10.2%)<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Side Project (7.55%).<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">The average percentage of beers contributed per brewery relative to the total number of different beers produced was <strong>3.19%<\/strong>, and any brewery with more than <strong>6.78%<\/strong> was considered to be an outlier.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>Tree House<\/strong> and <strong>Toppling Goliath<\/strong> were also found to be contributing a statistically significant number of beers to both <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.beersyndicate.com\/blog\/data-chug-outlier-breweries-beeradvocates-top-250\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BeerAdvocate\u2019s list of Top 250<\/a> <\/span>and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.beersyndicate.com\/blog\/beeradvocate-top-50-beers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Top 50\u00a0Beers<\/span>,<\/a> which suggests that both of these breweries are of particular note.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">However, there is at least one more major data point to consider in our quest to uncover the ultimate breweries: RateBeer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><em>Next on Tap<\/em>&#8230;<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.beersyndicate.com\/blog\/data-chug-analysis-ratebeers-top-50-beers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color:
