{"id":5197,"date":"2018-08-17T20:59:18","date_gmt":"2018-08-17T20:59:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.beer-syndicate.com\/blog\/?p=5197"},"modified":"2019-11-21T18:15:00","modified_gmt":"2019-11-21T18:15:00","slug":"every-hangover-cure-three-sheets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/beersyndicate.com\/blog\/every-hangover-cure-three-sheets\/","title":{"rendered":"Every Hangover Cure from <em>Three Sheets<\/em>"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">If you\u2019ve never heard of the drinking\/travel show <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Three_Sheets\"><em>Three Sheets<\/em>,<\/a><\/span> well, not to oversell it, but it is very likely the greatest drinking show.\u00a0 <u>Ever<\/u>.\u00a0 Over the course of four seasons (52 episodes), endearingly witty host <em>Zane Lamprey<\/em> (a.k.a. \u201cThe Guinea Pig of Booze\u201d) traversed the globe and imbibed in everything from a majestic $10,000 bottle of 50-year-old scotch in Scotland, to snake penis wine in Taiwan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><div id=\"attachment_5267\" style=\"width: 561px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.beersyndicate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Three-Sheets-Logo.png\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5267\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-5267\" src=\"http:\/\/www.beersyndicate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Three-Sheets-Logo-300x169.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"551\" height=\"318\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5267\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">[Three Sheets Logo]<\/p><\/div><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">(By the way, if you missed the original series run, you can find it on YouTube, Hulu, etc.\u00a0 And if you\u2019re thirsty for <u>new episodes<\/u>, you\u2019re in luck because <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ZaneLamprey\/videos\/three-sheets\/10155490780638635\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><em><u>Three Sheets is coming back!<\/u><\/em><\/strong><\/span><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">)<\/span><\/em><\/a><\/span><\/p><!--CusAds0-->\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Of course, being a dedicated drinking diplomat usually comes at a price which is customarily paid in the form of a hangover.\u00a0 But with almost every new hangover came a hangover cure&#8212; some more effective than others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">That said, sometimes the actual effectiveness of the hangover cures presented on the show was a bit vague.\u00a0 But we did our homework, and it turns out that there\u2019s actually a <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0345511581\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0345511581&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=wwwbeersyndic-20&amp;linkId=b1da8b68a0e0a293d9ab4ec199c31e37\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Three Sheets<\/em> book (4.5\/5 stars on Amazon)<\/a><\/span> that spells out the efficacy of the hangover cures by assigning each one a rating of 1 \u2013 3 sheets.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.beersyndicate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Three-Sheets-Book.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5260 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.beersyndicate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Three-Sheets-Book-188x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"188\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/beersyndicate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Three-Sheets-Book-188x300.jpg 188w, https:\/\/beersyndicate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Three-Sheets-Book.jpg 411w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 188px) 100vw, 188px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">As the book explains, \u201ca hangover remedy that gets a one-sheet rating would do the trick if you only had a few beers the night before.\u00a0 Two sheets is for the morning after you had more than a few but you still remember how you got home.\u00a0 A remedy that\u2019s three sheets is effective for even the surliest of hangovers&#8212; the ones that usually linger until well into the next evening.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">The only catch with the book is that it only covers 15 hangover cures despite there being 52 episodes in the series, but we\u2019ll do our best to sort it out.\u00a0 In addition, the book points out that there is no such thing as a total hangover <em>cure<\/em> (because that wouldn\u2019t stay a secret for long), and therefore uses the term hangover <em>remedy <\/em>instead of cure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">With that, we present to you:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 22pt;\"><strong>Every Hangover Cure from <em><u>Three Sheets<\/u><\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Below we cover the place where the hangover occurred, what caused it, the corresponding hangover cure (when mentioned), and, whenever possible, how well the hangover cure worked just in case you ever find yourself in a similar predicament.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 22pt;\"><strong><u>Season 1<\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>1. Belgium<\/strong>:<\/span> Zane drinks a chocolate beer, a 22 proof beer, and booze made from made with Brussels sprouts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Hangover Cure<\/strong>:<\/span> On the show, the hangover cure was <u>chocolate<\/u>. <em>Did it work?<\/em>\u00a0 Well, Zane said he didn\u2019t have a hangover anymore, so <em>yes<\/em>?\u00a0 However, in the \u201cBelgium\u201d section in the book, there wasn\u2019t a single mention of chocolate as a hangover cure, but instead the remedy was the standard Belgian fare of mussels &amp; fries with a splash of vinegar.\u00a0 <em>Effectiveness score?<\/em> 2-out-of-3 sheets.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>2. Costa Rica<\/strong>:<\/span> Bottoms up, amigos, as Zane goes <em>Three Sheets <\/em>to Costa Rica where he pounds local cervezas including Imperial, Bavaria and Kaiser, followed by a few foo-foo drinks such as a strawberry daiquiri, marisombra (ingredients: peach, coconut cream, amaretto, ice and white rum), a flaming \u201cla cucaracha\u201d (coffee liquor and tequila flamb\u00e9),<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">\u00a0and then brings down the house with the dreaded<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> <a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Guaro_(drink)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Guaro<\/em>,<\/a><\/span> also known as \u201cGringo killer\u201d, a sugar cane based spirit popular in Costa Rica and other Latin American countries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Hangover Cure:<\/strong> <\/span><u>Coffee<\/u> in various incarnations including regular coffee, coffee + beer (that\u2019s a thing), and coffee + brandy.\u00a0 <em>Did it work?<\/em> The coffee &amp; brandy got Zane drunk again, so <em>maybe?<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>3. Wales:<\/strong><\/span> Zane explores Welsh pub culture and takes a crack at the world famous \u201cMumbles Mile\u201d, a pub crawl where in order to claim victory, you have to imbibe at 10 of the pubs on the route. Among other libations, Zane drinks \u201creal ale\u201d (cask-conditioned ale) such as <em>Brains<\/em> and <em>Warrior<\/em> brand brews which despite urban legend are <em>not<\/em> served at room temperature.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Hangover Cure:<\/strong><\/span> Traditional Welsh breakfast of cockles (tiny shell fish) and laverbread (a cooked paste made from seaweed and oatmeal).\u00a0 <em>Did it work?<\/em>\u00a0 Nope.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>4. Champagne, France: <\/strong><\/span>Yep, the beverage of choice in Champagne is <em>Champagne<\/em>, <em>Champagne<\/em> and more <em>Champagne<\/em>, alleged not to render a hangover. So did Zane get a hangover from Champagne? Spoiler alert: <u>yes<\/u>.\u00a0 A rough one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Hangover Cure:<\/strong> <\/span>In the book, \u201conion soup\u201d was listed as the hangover remedy, but was given the lowest effectiveness rating possible with 1-out-of-3 sheets.\u00a0 On the show, Zane said that there wasn\u2019t a hangover cure in Champagne, so he went out for a little a Champagne breakfast, a.k.a. hair of the dog, or in French \u201csoigner le mal par le mal\u201d (to fight evil with evil).\u00a0 No mention of its effectiveness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Booze fact<\/strong>:<\/span> The expression \u201chair of the dog\u201d refers to a hangover cure whereby the <em>hangoveree<\/em> drinks more of the same booze that caused the hangover in the first place.\u00a0 The phrase is actually short for \u201chair of the dog that bit you\u201d referring to an old folk remedy against rabies where a person who is bit by a rabid dog is advised to place a bit of that same dog\u2019s hair in the wound; hence the French version of \u201cfighting evil with evil\u201d.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>5. Jamaica<\/strong>:<\/span> Feel the rhythm, feel the rhyme, get on up, it\u2019s drinking time! Rum, Red Stripe and stout were at the root of Zane\u2019s bumboclaat hangover in Jamrock, but <em>is there any remedy?<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Hangover Cure:<\/strong><\/span> \u201cHerbal\u201d teas. \u00a0The show doesn\u2019t really spell it out as directly as does the book, but as you might have guessed the <em>special<\/em> \u201cherb\u201d in one of the \u201cherbal\u201d teas was none other than one of Jamaica\u2019s <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/world\/2017\/11\/28\/jamaica-wants-booming-marijuana-market-but-farmers-able-cash-in\/903585001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">main exports:<\/a><\/span> <u>ganja<\/u>.\u00a0 On the show, Zane definitely wasn\u2019t feeling <em>hungover<\/em> after the herbal tea, but rather \u201cirie\u201d (a Jamaican patois term for happy and carefree).\u00a0 In the book, Zane was a little more explicit about the tea\u2019s effectiveness when he writes that after 30 minutes of ingesting some of the worst tasting tea he\u2019d ever had, he was so stoned that he missed the last camera shoot of the day, and was still toasted on the way to the airport the next morning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><em>So was the herbal tea any good as a hangover cure?<\/em>\u00a0 Put it this way: Zane ended up giving the special tea the absolute highest level of effectiveness with a whopping 4-out-of-3 sheets. \u00a0Quote: \u201cDid I feel hungover? Ireland<\/strong>:<\/span> Hangover cause: Guinness, whiskey, and a \u201cspecial\u201d, or roughly a pint of Smithwick\u2019s topped off with a bit of Guinness (sort of the Irish version of a black and tan).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Hangover Cure:<\/strong> <\/span>Irish coffee, a.k.a. coffee + whiskey topped with cream. <em>Did it work?<\/em> Didn\u2019t say in the show, but in the book\u2026 it was a resounding <em><u>yes<\/u><\/em>!\u00a0 In fact, Irish coffee as a hangover remedy was given a superlative rating of 3-out-of-3 sheets, said to be effective against even the surliest of hangovers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>7. Tequila, Mexico<\/strong>:<\/span> When in the town of Tequila, drink as the Tequilians do! As such, Zane sipped tequila including reposado (aged 2 months to 1 year) and \u201cextra-a\u00f1ejo\u201d, in this case Jose Cuervo Reserva De La Familia, a blend of tequilas aged up to 30 years. Other tequila-based libations included tamarind margaritas, a few foo-foo drinks, and flaming la cucaracha bombs (a shot of tequila &amp; coffee liqueur dropped into a glass of beer).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Hangover Cure:<\/strong><\/span> A meat torta (sandwich) with hot chili sauce.\u00a0 <em>Did it work?<\/em> Si Se\u00f1or, the hot chili sauce officially wiped out the hangover thus earning a 3-out-of-3 sheets of hangover-crushing effectiveness.\u00a0 That said, Zane points out in the book that food that is spicy, high in fat, and high in protein serves to <em>distract<\/em> you from being hungover, but sweating from the spice actually dehydrates the body which further increases the hangover.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>8. Belize<\/strong>:<\/span> Belize brought it with Belikin brand lager, mojitos, margaritas, rum &amp; coke, cashew wine (made with the cashew fruit sans the nut) and \u201cviper rum\u201d (a bottle of rum that a viper died in).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Hangover Cure:<\/strong><\/span> A Belizean \u201cMichelada\u201d (lemon juice, spices, hot sauce and beer).\u00a0 <em>Did it work?<\/em>\u00a0 Let\u2019s put it this way: the hangover was more so <em>postponed<\/em> than cured.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 22pt;\"><strong><u>Season 2<\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>1. Croatia<\/strong>:<\/span> Zane imbibed bermet (a spiced desert wine with grapes and spices), lager, Maraschino (cherry liqueur), and travarica (herbed grappa).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Hangover Cure:<\/strong><\/span> A cold dip in the Adriatic.\u00a0 <em>Did it work?<\/em>\u00a0 After the plunge, Zane felt more cold than hungover, so let\u2019s call it a wash.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>2. Japan<\/strong>:<\/span> Here\u2019s what the drink menu looked like for the Japan episode: Sak\u00e9, sak\u00e9 and a lot more sak\u00e9.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Hangover Cure:<\/strong><\/span> Maybe it was the constant flow of food, or the high quality sak\u00e9, but this was one of only two episodes in the entire series where no hangover cure was required because no hangover was had.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Curiously, the book seems to suggest a different story and lists two \u201cfutsukayoi\u201d cures, one for before the bed, and one for after.\u00a0 By the way, \u201cfutsukayoi\u201d is the Japanese word for hangover, and translates as \u201ctwo days drunk.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Cure # 1<\/strong>:<\/span> Ramen soup before you pass out, where the noodles are supposed to fill the belly while the salty broth rehydrates.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Cure # 2<\/strong>:<\/span> Green tea, miso soup and \u201cgenki\u201d drinks for the morning after.\u00a0 The tea is for the caffeine kick, the soup for the comfort and salt, and the genki to heal just about everything including your hangover, a cold, lack of energy and a low sex-drive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Zane gave these remedies 2-out-of-3 sheets.\u00a0 The noodles made the forthcoming hangover slightly more manageable, but didn\u2019t prevent it, and the green tea, miso soup and genki drinks in the morning left Zane cracked out, hungry and over the edge, respectively.\u00a0 In other words, a fidgety mess.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>3. Czech Republic<\/strong>:<\/span> Hangover cause: Absinth, beer (Pilsner Urquell and the original Budweiser), and becherovka (herbal liqueur).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Hangover Cure:<\/strong> <\/span>Soaking in a beer bath (bathtub filled with beer).\u00a0 <em>Did it work?<\/em> Didn\u2019t say.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>4. The Philippines<\/strong>:<\/span> Hangover cause: Beer (San Miguel) and Lambanog (coco palm liquor) of various strengths (up to 83% ABV).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Hangover Cure:<\/strong><\/span> Fried shrimp, shrimp ceviche, frog legs, and beetle larva.\u00a0 <em>Did it work?<\/em> Zane said he felt great and a little confused, so that counts!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>5. Venice, Italy<\/strong>:<\/span> Hangover cause: Prosecco (spumante and frizzante), Moretti lager, wine, wine spritzer (wine + aperol + soda water), bitter spritz (same as a wine spritzer, just swap the aperol with Campari), and grappa.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Hangover Cure:<\/strong><\/span> None mentioned.\u00a0 Don\u2019t look at me, I didn\u2019t produce the episode.\u00a0 Nevertheless, <u>espresso<\/u> is a fairly common hangover cure throughout Italy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>6. Taipei, Taiwan<\/strong>:<\/span> Hangover cause: Zane drinks snake\u2019s blood, venom, and bile, snake penis wine, Taiwan Beer, and Kaoliang (a sorghum-based spirit).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Hangover Cure<\/strong>:<\/span> A painful liver-targeted reflexology massage.\u00a0 Given a 2-out-of-3 sheets effectiveness rating in the book, after a 60 minute rub down, the hangover was replaced with throbbing feet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>7. Munich, Germany<\/strong>:<\/span> Hangover cause: Bavarian whiskey (Slyrs brand), schnapps (both raspberry and apple-pear), and plenty of Oktoberfest beer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Hangover Cure:<\/strong> <\/span>White sausage (veal) and a pretzel, a hangover cure associated with Bavaria.\u00a0 <em>Did it work?<\/em>\u00a0 Not instantly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Booze Fact<\/strong>:<\/span> A common German word for \u201changover\u201d is \u201cKatzenjammer\u201d, which translates to \u201ccat\u2019s wail\u201d, where the sufferer&#8217;s groans of discomfort is likened to that of a wailing cat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>8. Puerto Rico<\/strong>:<\/span> Hangover cause: Don Q rum with coconut water, Don Q of various ages, the original pi\u00f1a colada, Medella brand beer, and mojitos.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Hangover Cure:<\/strong> <\/span>Fish stew with hot sauce.\u00a0 <em>Did it work?<\/em>\u00a0 Well, if getting a runny nose from the hot sauce and hot broth counts, then sure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>9. South Korea<\/strong>:<\/span> Hangover cause: Soju, originally a rice-based spirit but later was made from sweet potato or tapioca during the Korean War when rice was needed for food, but rice-based versions can again be found today. Mass-produced Cass brand lager, and soju beer bombs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Hangover Cure<\/strong>:<\/span> The cure this time was none other than Korean hangover soup!\u00a0 Made with cow intestines, coagulated cow\u2019s blood, and rice topped off with red pepper spice to sweat the hangover out.\u00a0 <em>Did it work?<\/em>\u00a0 Didn\u2019t say.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>10.
