(By the way, if you want more ideas on how to make really great hard cider at home, feel free to check out the tutorial called <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.beersyndicate.com\/app\/Tutorial\/Details\/49\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;How to Make Great Hard Cider&#8221;.)<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">In the past, I had used Trader Joe\u2019s brand <em>Honey Crisp Apple Cider<\/em> and <em>Unfiltered Apple Juice<\/em> as the base apple juice in making hard cider at home, never really considering the safety of the juice I was buying.<\/span><\/p><!--CusAds0-->\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-5731\" title=\"Trader Joe's Apple Juice\" src=\"http:\/\/www.beersyndicate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Trader-Joes-Apple-Juice.png\" alt=\"Trader Joe's Apple Juice\" width=\"514\" height=\"277\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Then I came across an <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.consumerreports.org\/food-safety\/arsenic-and-lead-are-in-your-fruit-juice-what-you-need-to-know\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">article from Consumer Reports<\/a> <\/span>released in January 2019 discussing its testing of several different brands of apple juice for heavy metals such as lead, mercury, cadmium, and inorganic arsenic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">The results of the report showed several apple juice brands were identified as having potentially harmful levels of at least one of those heavy metals including <u>Trader Joe\u2019s Fresh Pressed Apple Juice<\/u>, which contained an average of 15.4 ppb of inorganic arsenic, a known carcinogen, making it above the FDA\u2019s 10 ppb proposed limit and well above Consumer Reports\u2019 recommended cutoff of 3 ppb.\u00a0 At 15.4 ppb, Consumer Reports advised of potential risk to adults and children if consuming as little as <u>4 ounces<\/u> of the juice per day.\u00a0 [<u>Trader Joe\u2019s Organic Apple Juice<\/u> presented a potential risk to children if consuming 8 ounces or more per day.]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Although I hadn\u2019t been using those specific brands of apple juice from Trader Joe\u2019s, I decided to go with one of the twelve brands that Consumer Reports listed as \u201cbetter alternatives\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">These twelve \u201cbetter alternative\u201d apple juices were:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>1.<\/strong> 365 Everyday Value (Whole Foods) Organic Apple Juice, 100% Juice<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>2.<\/strong> Apple &amp; Eve 100% Juice, Apple Juice<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>3.<\/strong> Big Win (Rite Aid) 100% Juice, Apple Juice<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>4.<\/strong> Clover Valley (Dollar General) 100% Apple Juice<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>5.<\/strong> Gerber Apple 100% Juice<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>6.<\/strong> Market Pantry (Target) 100% Juice, Apple<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>7.<\/strong> Mott&#8217;s 100% Juice, Apple Original<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>8.<\/strong> Mott&#8217;s for Tots Apple<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>9.<\/strong> Nature&#8217;s Own 100% Apple Juice<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>10.<\/strong> Old Orchard 100% Juice, Apple<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>11.<\/strong> Simply Balanced (Target) Organic Apple Juice, 100% Juice<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><strong>12.<\/strong> Tree Top 100% Apple Juice<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Not interested in personally buying all twelve of those recommended brands for taste-testing purposes, I turned to the internet for help.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">According to an apple juice taste-off conducted by <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mercurynews.com\/2016\/08\/05\/taste-off-the-best-apple-juice-and-the-one-that-tastes-like-nothing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>The Mercury News<\/em><\/a> <\/span>of Silicon Valley, Whole Food\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/37sV5OQ\"><u>365 Everyday Value Organic Apple Juice<\/u><\/a> was given the highest rating of the apple juices they sampled along with this description: \u201cThe crisp, sweet flavor of just-picked apples and balance of acid to sugar makes this a stellar choice.\u201d<\/span><\/p><!--CusAds0-->\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.beersyndicate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/365-Apple-Juice.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-5705\" title=\"365 Everyday Value (Whole Foods) Organic Apple Juice, 100% Juice\" src=\"http:\/\/www.beersyndicate.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/365-Apple-Juice.png\" alt=\"365 Everyday Value (Whole Foods) Organic Apple Juice, 100% Juice\" width=\"302\" height=\"403\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">At about $9.49 per gallon, the juice wasn\u2019t the cheapest, but it tasted great, it was recommended as a safer option by Consumer Reports, and is sold in a one gallon glass jug which can be used as a fermentation vessel, saving about $6-$7 if I had to buy one from a homebrew shop.\u00a0 Done deal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">The only drawback to this juice was that it was unfiltered (i.e. cloudy), which means we\u2019d need to take an extra step if we want to clarify it, but that&#8217;s easily done with 1\/2 &#8211; 1 tsp of pectic enzyme per gallon of cider.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Regardless if you choose <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/37sV5OQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><u>365 Everyday Value Organic Apple Juice<\/u><\/a> <\/span>from Whole Food\u2019s or some other brand from wherever, it may be worthwhile to review the list of tested apple juice brands from <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.consumerreports.org\/food-safety\/arsenic-and-lead-are-in-your-fruit-juice-what-you-need-to-know\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Consumer Reports<\/a> <\/span>to make a better informed purchasing decision.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">On a side note, Consumer Reports did contact Trader Joe\u2019s about its test results, and according to Consumer Reports, a spokesperson from Trader Joe\u2019s said \u201cWe will investigate your findings, as [we are] always ready to take whatever action is necessary to ensure the safety and quality of our products.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Curious to see if Trader Joe\u2019s investigated the Consumer Reports findings and what results they found, I emailed Trader Joe\u2019s and received the following response: \u201cAll apple juice will have trace levels of arsenic as arsenic is a naturally occurring substance in soil.\u00a0 Arsenic levels in apple and other fruit juices are tested and monitored. Trader Joe&#8217;s juice arsenic levels all test well below the maximum allowance set forth by the FDA. We are fully aware of the recent reports regarding apple and apple juice blend beverages.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Our products are also required to be tested and meet all U.S. government standards, as well as our very strict quality, safety and ethical standards. Please know that if we had any reason for concern, we would not continue to supply that product and\/or use that supplier.
